The weather appears to be settling out some after the hurricane and we are finally moving into a fall weather pattern. We have made it into October and the days of northeast winds are helping push some bait out the inlets. Some stronger northeast winds are forecast for the middle of this week, but should be subsiding by the weekend. We had fairly nice weather this past weekend, but there were some showers and the northeast wind made things a little bumpy offshore. The good thing is that there were some hungry fish spread around to keep folks smiling. As I said last week, my thoughts and prayers are with those who suffered incredible losses and are trying to put things back together. I have heard from old friends and even a few new ones in the affected areas. They are coping as best they can, but there are definitely some needs that we can assist. There was a good yellowfin and wahoo bite at the Big Rock. A few dolphin and kings were mixed in also. King mackerel bit pretty well this weekend. The king bite was best from just off the beaches out to roughly 70 feet. This fishing is improving after Hurricane Isabel's passing. Off Topsail and Southport were the best bites. The ocean piers had another good weekend. Spanish mackerel and bluefish were caught almost everywhere. Several piers had good flounder catches and there were large spots and sea mullet too. Several piers reported catching kings, with Ocean Crest Pier, Oak Island, leading the way with 13. Congratulations to the Mirage II for winning the Onslow Bay KMT and the Tricky Ricky for winning the HOOK (Helping Out Our Kids) KMT this past weekend.. This weekend the US Open King Mackerel Tournament (800-457-6964 or www.usopenkmt.com) will be held in Southport and the Seagull Bait & Tackle Fall Surf Tournament (910-458-7135) will be held in Carolina Beach.
